Club SCW FAQ - Create a Group

This is a series of articles to help you get the most out of Club SCW, an online community provided to you by Souhegan Cycleworks. Club SCW is intended to be a place for like minded folks to plan activities together, do the activity, and share stories, pictures or videos about the activity. This article helps you learn how you can make your own Club SCW Groups.

Anyone who has an account in Club SCW can create a Group. Groups are a way to have a circle of friends plan activities together where the activity is focused around a topic. Examples may be if you lead a weekly ride or hike, or if you are riding in a Charity ride and are looking to be a focal point for the event.

For our Tutorial, we'll create a group for folks who are riding in the Tour de Cure in Kennebunk Maine. The group will allow anyone riding in the Charity ride to join the group and find out about training rides, fund raising, and even arrange car-pooling on the day of the event. After the ride is over, photos from the ride can be posted for everyone to enjoy.

First, you'll need to have an account in Club SCW. If you have not made an account for yourself, you'll need to go through the registration process or create an account using your Facebook login.

Once you're logged in to Club SCW, you can click on the "Groups" tab in your profile page. The default setting will take you to a page showing you the Groups that you have created or belong to. If you're a new Club SCW user, this page will be blank -- for now.

You'll notice in the gray menu area under "My Groups" over to the right is an option labeled "Create". Click this link to Create a new group. The New Group form is displayed.

Now we enter the details of your Group. In the Group Name field we'd enter "Tour de Cure - Kennebunk, ME". Next, go to the Description field and type a sentence or 2 detailing the specifics of the group. For our Tutorial we'd say that this Group is intended to be a meeting place for anyone riding in the Kennebunk Maine Tour de Cure.

Groups are divided into Categories. Club SCW has some standard categories already set. You are not able to change these categories but only select from the available list. In our case, we'll select "Road". If you'd us to add a new category send us an eMail at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and we'll add it in.

Just below that you can make this a private Group. In most cases you would want your Group to be public but if you'd like to have your own private area, go right ahead. This tutorial does not cover the specifics of how to add members into your private Group though.

Next up you should enable Group forums. This allows folks to post topics to the Group.

Now click on Show Advanced Settings. More options appear. We suggest that you allow anyone in the group to post photos and videos (what fun is it if group members can't share some great pictures for everyone else to see). We would suggest leaving the rest of the default settings as they are but feel free to make any changes you'd like -- after all, it is YOUR Group!

Now click the "Create Group" button and viola, you're Group is created and ready to accept members. It's that easy!

We're not done yet though. On the confirmation page for the group creation, there's one more step we need to do, that's to upload and Avatar or a Group image that identifies the group. Find yourself a graphic that you'd like to use for you group and save it on your local computer.

Now click "Upload a new avatar for your group" link. You will be taken to a screen that shows the Groups generic avatar created by Club SCW when you created the new group. Well that's boring. Click the "Choose File" button and locate the graphic you previously saved on your local computer.

Once you've selected the image, click on the "UPLOAD" button. The image is uploaded to Club SCW and your group's image is now your awesome picture. COOL!

You are finally taken to your new Groups page. Congratulations, you've create your very own Club SCW group!
